Indoor Air Quality
What health issues are associated with poor indoor air quality?
Health Canada has identified a number of health issues caused by poor indoor air quality. The more serious ones are:
- Cancer: Frequent contact with formaldehyde present in pressed wood products that use glue, paints, adhesives, varnishes, floor finishes, paper products, vehicle exhaust and tobacco smoke has numerous health issues ranging from burning sensation in the eyes, nose and throat to respiratory illnesses or even cancer of the nasal cavity. Long-term asbestos exposure is proven to cause lung cancer, asbestosis or mesothelioma.
- Asthma and allergies: Allergies, asthma and many other respiratory illnesses are much more severe when mould, dust and other pollutants are present in the air you breathe. In fact, prolonged exposure to mould leads to eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing and phlegm build-up, wheezing and shortness of breath.
- Anaemia and unexplained weight loss: Although contact with asbestos is much less than what it used be in the 80s, continued exposure to even minimal amounts can cause major health issues like shortness of breath, chronic/ persistent cough, constant chest pain, unexplained weight loss as well as Anaemia.
- Convulsions and coma: Exposure to carbon monoxide results in the body producing carboxyhemoglobin (COHb), which reduces the blood’s ability to carry oxygen. Symptoms range from headaches, tiredness, shortness of breath and impaired motor functions to dizziness, chest pain, tiredness, poor vision, difficulty in thinking and at very high levels of exposure, convulsions, coma and even death.
